Grants and Awards Funding

The Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba, along with the financial support of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, has a number of funding opportunities for researchers and students involved in child health research related studies.

CHRIM Grant and Award applications are available to current (renewed) Members and their trainees. Applicants for grants and awards must already be approved Member Scientists of CHRIM or a supervised trainee of a Member at the time of application. Co-application for membership and for research funding is not permitted. Applications for membership will be processed and reviewed first, and applicants will need to reapply for funding once their membership has been accepted.

Award Descriptions

Below you will find basic descriptions of grants and awards that are available along with the corresponding forms that you will need to apply. Please carefully review the Grants and Awards Guide 2017 for full information on each opportunity. Applications that do not meet the format or requirement as explained in the application forms and the Grants and Awards Guide will not be sent for review by the Grants and Awards Committee in that competition. For most competitions, applicants will have the opportunity to revise and resubmit for a future competition.

CHRIM OPERATING GRANTS

Operating Grants are intended for Member projects that will provide critical seed funding needed for preliminary data capture to enhance opportunities to obtain national peer-reviewed or industrial research support. Occasionally, extra funds become available in the form of endowment funds or other special donations, for a specific use or area of research designated by the donor. Application for these special funds will be administered as a separate category of an Operating Grant. Special funding is announced as it becomes available.

CHRIM SMALL GRANTS

Members, their trainees and research staff may use small grants to support research. If applicable, the supervising Member must sponsor and co-sign the application. Occasionally, extra funds become available in the form of endowment funds or other special donations, for a specific use or area of research designated by the donor. Application for these special funds will be administered as a separate category of a Small Grant. Special funding is announced as it becomes available.

CHRIM Small Grants

CHRIM TRAVEL GRANTS

The Travel Grant is intended for travel support of research trainees of CHRIM Members, specifically: graduate students (Masters or PhD program), post-doctoral fellows, and post-graduate medical trainees (residents from any department), who are primarily supervised by a Member of the Institute and will present their research related to child health at a conference or symposium. Members, undergraduate students, research assistants, research associates and technicians are not eligible.

All applications can be made to the travel grant committee at the time of abstract submission, at least one full review cycle prior to departure. For example, if departure is February 15th, applications must be submitted January 1st and NOT February 1st.

Members may receive one $1,250 award per calendar year to use for one trainee whom they primarily supervise. The award is granted prior to travel, and expenses are claimed afterwards by submitting original receipts with a travel expense claim form. Both forms can be found below. Applications will be reviewed by the Travel Grant Committee.

CHRIM UNDERGRADUATE SUMMER STUDENTSHIPS

Funding is available for undergraduate university or college students conducting research in Manitoba, supervised by a CHRIM Member. Summer Studentship Awards are designed to provide exposure to career opportunities in child health research early in post-secondary education. The value of the award is $6,000, to cover 12 weeks of summer employment.

Additional awards have been created to encourage Undergraduate Aboriginal Summer Studentships in partnership with the Network Environment for Aboriginal Health Research (NEAHR); the same application form may be used to apply for these awards, OR the submission process with NEAHR can be followed. Applications submitted to CHRIM will be reviewed by the Grants and Awards Committee.

CHRIM Summer Studentship

UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA BSC (MEDICINE) STUDENTSHIPS

In partnership with the Univerity, stipends of $5,000 are provided to students pursuing their BSc (Medicine) during their second and third years of medical school, under the supervision of a CHRIM Member and in a project related to child health research. Applications and detailed information on this program are available here through the University of Manitoba’s College of Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA BSC (DENTISTRY) STUDENTSHIPS

In partnership with the University, stipends of $5,000 are provided to students pursuing their BSc (Dentistry) during their second and third years of dental school, under the supervision of a CHRIM Member and in a project related to child health research. Applications and detailed information are available here through the University of Manitoba’s College of Dentistry in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

RESEARCH MANITOBA GRADUATE STUDENTSHIPS

We are proud to partner with Research Manitoba in providing Graduate Studentships to support highly qualified Masters and PhD trainees as they prepare for careers as independent child health researchers. The applicant must be supervised by a CHRIM Member at the time of application in order to qualify for matching funds from the Institute. Graduate Studentship awards consist of an annual, non-taxable stipend of $17,850, awarded for two years. RESEARCH MANITOBA POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS

Also in partnership with Research Manitoba, we provide matching funding for Post-Doctoral Fellowships to support highly qualified post-doctoral trainees in preparing for careers as independent child health researchers. The applicant must be supervised by a CHRIM Member at the time of application in order to qualify for matching funds from the Institute. All awards currently consist of a taxable, annual stipend of $36,750 and a $1500 travel allowance. Awards are for a one-year period and can be extended for a second year. RESEARCH MANITOBA CLINICAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

These fellowships are awarded by Research Manitoba with matching funds provided by CHRIM. The Clinical Post-Doctoral Fellowships Program is intended to help remedy the shortage of clinician-scientists in Manitoba. It provides financial support for a period of research training for high-quality candidates with undergraduate medical degrees, or equivalent, who intend to pursue careers as clinician-researchers. The applicant must be supervised by a CHRIM Member at the time of application in order to qualify for matching funds from the Institute, and must apply separately to the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba before submitting an application to Research Manitoba. All awards consist of an annual stipend $30,000 to $35,000 and a travel allowance of $1,500, available for up to two years. CCHCSP DOCTORAL AWARD

CCHCSP POSTDOCTORAL AWARD

CCHCSP CAREER DEVELOPMENT AWARD

These awards are granted by the Canadian Child Health Clinician Scientist Program (CCHCSP) in partnership with the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba. The CCHCSP provides support for highly qualified child health clinician candidates to develop their requisite knowledge and skills for a career as an independent scientist in child health research. Trainees engage in research training and a core curriculum in CHRIM as one of the participating Child Health Research Training Centers of the CCHCSP. Research training is supervised by a research mentor and an advisory committee and is structured to facilitate excellence in research with an interdisciplinary focus.

  • The Doctoral Award supports health professional degree trainees and consists of an annual stipend of $50,000 for up to four years.
  • The Postdoctoral Award supports health professional PhDs and consists of an annual stipend of $70,000 for up to three
  • The Career Development Award is given to Clinician Scientists engaging in research training and a core curriculum, aimed at building a career in child health research within a mentored research program. The Career Development Award consists of an annual stipend of $70,000 for up to four

These competitions are held twice each year. Applicants for any of these awards must apply to the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba at least two months before submitting to the CCHCSP by the due dates listed below.
